HLA Type - Out-of-town Hospital

Out-of-town Hospital

Hospitals were built just beyond urban limits in Victorian times, to provide healthy environments for those suffering from tuberculosis or mental illness. Most have now closed and while some have been completely demolished others have been only partially cleared. The grounds and any remaining buildings have been used for housing and associated developments.

Out-of-town Hospital

Hartwood District Asylum near Shotts was built for up to 500 patients from Lanark and the surrounding area. Although partially demolished it is typical of an out-of-town hospital built before the 1st World War. Historical and current OS maps are the main sources of data.
