HLA Type - Medieval Manorial Enclosure

Medieval Manorial Enclosure

In the south and east of Scotland the landowning elite built enclosed settlements, such as moated sites or granges, for habitation. They only rarely occur in the north and west of the country.

Medieval Manorial Enclosure

The large oval-shaped enclosure of the Palace Yard moated site near Gatehouse of Fleet in south-west Scotland is visible in the middle of this image. The primary source for identifying such sites is Canmore and its associated archives but they are also noted on OS maps and visible in aerial photographs.
