In the recent past agricultural grants were used to encourage the creation of improved pasture in unenclosed rough grazings, particularly across southern Scotland. The bright green pasture created by fertilising, drainage, re-seeding or direct-drilling of clover contrasts with the surrounding unimproved grasslands.
This area of unenclosed improved pasture is clearly distinct when compared with the surrounding rough grazing. Such contrasts are most evident on recent aerial photographs.
