Modern transport systems have focussed on the construction and extension of multi-laned motorways, with their associated service stations. Providing links between major cities, they cover considerable areas of land. Dual carriageways, major junctions and associated park-and-rides are also recorded as HLA data but other roads are excluded because they are too small and narrow.
The Raith Interchange of the M74 in South Lanarkshire illustrates the extent of a modern motorway junction. Current OS maps provide the source for such roads, their embankments and cuttings.
